Pet Cost Helper — Privacy Policy

Pet Cost Helper helps you keep track of what your pets cost. We built it to collect as little about you as possible, and we don't sell your data to anyone. Here's exactly what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.

Who we are

Pet Cost Helper ("we," "us," the "app") is provided by Dogs Trained Right LLC. Questions about your privacy or this policy? Email [email protected].

What we collect

The account you create. When you sign up, we collect your email address and a password. Passwords are stored only in secure, hashed form — we never see or store your actual password. We don't collect a name, phone number, or any social login. That's the entire account.

What you put in the app. The pet profiles, expenses, amounts, categories, dates, vendors, and notes you enter. This is the heart of the app, and it's yours.

Receipts you scan. When you photograph a receipt, the image is sent to an AI provider that reads it to pull out the total, the line items, and the categories. After a successful read, the receipt image is stored in your own private, per-user folder in our secure cloud storage so you can view it later, and it stays there until you delete the associated expense or your account. If a scan fails to read (a blurry or unreadable photo), no image is stored at all.

Your subscription status. When you start a trial or subscribe, Apple processes the payment and our subscription tool (RevenueCat) tells the app whether your subscription is active. We never see or store your card number — that stays with Apple. RevenueCat receives an anonymized account identifier plus your App Store purchase and renewal information so it can manage your subscription state.

Basic technical data. We do not use any analytics, advertising, or crash-tracking tools. We don't build profiles, and we don't track your behavior across other apps or websites.

We do not collect your payment card details, and we don't ask for your precise location.

How we use it

To run the app: store your expenses, read your receipts and split them into categories, show your totals and (in the future) how your costs compare to typical costs, manage your subscription, and answer you when you contact support. That's it. We don't use your data for advertising, and we don't build profiles to sell.

Who touches your data

We keep the outside-services list short, and each one only gets what it needs:

  • Apple — processes your subscription payment and billing.
  • RevenueCat — tells the app whether your subscription is active; receives an anonymized account identifier and your App Store purchase data.
  • Supabase — stores your account, pet, and expense data, hosts our backend, and stores your receipt images in a private per-user folder.
  • Anthropic — reads the receipts you scan (via its Claude AI model) to extract the total and line items. Receipt images are sent to Anthropic only at the moment of scanning, to perform that extraction.

We do not sell your personal data, and we don't share it for cross-context advertising.

Receipts and AI, in plain terms

This is the part people ask about most. When you scan a receipt, the photo is sent from your device to our secure backend, which passes it to an AI model (Anthropic's Claude) that turns it into an expense. On a successful read, the image is saved to your private storage folder so you can view it later; you can delete it by deleting the expense (or your whole account). The extracted numbers land in your expense list, where you can edit or delete them. AI reads receipts well, but it isn't perfect, so it's worth a quick look that the split came out right.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and expense data for as long as your account is active. When you delete an individual expense, its receipt image is removed from storage once no other expense still references it. When you delete your account (see below), we permanently delete your account, all your expenses and pets, and all your receipt images. Routine backups age out on our cloud provider's standard schedule.

Your choices and rights

  • See and fix your data. Most of it is right in the app, and you can edit or delete expenses anytime.
  • Delete your account. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data from within the app, in Settings. This removes your login, your expenses and pets, and your receipt images. It can't be undone.
  • Export your data. The app does not currently offer a data-export feature. If you'd like a copy of your data, email us at the address above.

Depending on where you live, you may have extra rights:

  • California (CCPA / CPRA): to know what we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and to not have it sold — which we don't do.
  • EEA / UK (GDPR): to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your data, and to object to certain uses. Our legal basis for processing your data is performing our contract with you (running the app you signed up for) and, where relevant, your consent.

Children

Pet Cost Helper is a tool for adults managing pet costs. It isn't directed to children, and we don't knowingly collect data from children under 13 (or under 16 where that's the local rule).

Keeping your data safe

We use reasonable measures to protect your data. Your data is transmitted over encrypted connections, stored with a reputable cloud provider, and isolated per account — every account can access only its own data, enforced at the database level. Your receipt images sit in a private storage area that only your account can reach. No app or service can promise perfect security, but we take it seriously.

Where your data is processed

Your data is stored and processed in the United States. If you use the app from outside the US, you're agreeing to that transfer.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top, and for anything important we'll provide notice in the app.
